Whether you’re happy or sad about this post probably depends on whether you remember the original launch because it means you’ve stacked another 28 years on top of your age, but yes, it’s true: The grand-daddy of MMORPGs, Ultima Online, has officially counted its 28th year as of today.

“It is with great honor and joy that we celebrate 28 incredible years of Ultima Online!” Broadsword announced this morning. “Since 1997, Britannia has been home to countless adventurers spanning generations – and for your unwavering support through the decades, we say thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Vets can log in now to scoop up their new presents, plus the anniversary post also includes a tease for what’s coming in publish 121 in October – no real surprise, it’s fall and winter events. Next year, the devs are looking at housing improvements, the PvP revamp, the next phase of New Legacy, new holidays (for the first time in forever!), and continuing efforts on the ancient client:

“We’ve also heard the community’s call to breathe new life into some beloved encounters. To that end, we are excited to introduce four brand-new Britannia-exclusive holidays in 2026 – Kindlehart, Sprite Light, Moonveil, and Shardfall – each blending the spirit of old encounters with fresh challenges and rewards. Meanwhile, work continues on an updated Classic Client and a steady march of bug fixes and quality of life updates to ensure a smooth and magical journey for all.”

Broadsword devs have been streaming the festivities this afternoon.
